Global demand for plastic additives up 5.7%

According to Ceresana, global demand for plastic additives was about 33.3 million tons in 2018 and 31.5 million tons in 2017, up 5.7 percent year on year. More than half of these plastic additives are produced in the Asia Pacific region. North America and Western Europe lag far behind.
Because plastics are lighter and more practical in most cases, they are increasingly replacing other materials, such as wood or metal. Therefore, the demand for plastic additives will continue to increase in the coming years.

Main consumer driver: Construction

Based on its advantages of safer, more reliable, lighter and cheaper, plastic is used more and more widely in various industries, especially in the construction industry: Plastic is becoming the first choice of building thermal insulation devices.
The material requirements of the construction industry must meet a number of standards, such as efficiency, quality, environmental protection and fire protection. Therefore, in all the world applications, the construction industry is the use of plastic additives in the most applications.
The second-largest use of plastic additives is in packaging. Plastic packaging is becoming more and more popular because of its portability, microwave heating and beautiful appearance. At the same time, the use of plastic packaging can easily identify the packaging and can maintain long-term product quality and flavor.
In addition, the automobile manufacturing industry and Electronics and electrical appliances industry is also an important industry for plastic consumption.

Most commonly used in PVC

Because polyvinyl chloride is a brittle, hard white material, this plastic type is the most widely used additive in the world to make it suitable for a variety of applications.
PVC manufacturers are by far the largest consumers of plasticizers, which make plastics softer, more flexible, smoother and more resilient. For example, plasticizers are used in materials such as cable compounds and flooring.

The most common type is filler

More than 50% of the world's plastic additives are fillers. PLASTICIZERS and pigments came in second and third. In 2018, more than 17.6 million tons of fillers were used in plastics.
In general, low-cost fillers increase the volume of the material mixture without altering its main properties. In addition, the production of high-performance filled plastics to meet the actual performance needs of individual customers is also on the rise: they contain up to 85% of the filler, have superior mechanical properties, and in most cases are more cost-effective than traditional materials.
